Apps to Download

1. Alipay

Essential for payments. 99% of venues across China accept QR code payments via Alipay.

Supports overseas phone registration; links Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB, Discover, and Diners Club. Has English interface. 200 RMB fee-free threshold (3% fee above that). Core functions: Scan, Pay/Receive, Transport. In Transport, tap Switch provider  and select DiDi for ride-hailing. Search "meituan" for food delivery.

2. WeChat

China's leading all-in-one social + payment app. Add travel friends, coordinate with hotels/merchants. Once payment activated, it has even wider acceptance.

Supports overseas phone sign-up (needs a qualified WeChat user to scan your QR code for verification). Payment activation requires: Real-Name Verification with passport, Face Recognition, and linking an international card.

3. DiDi

China's leading ride-hailing platform. Far better value than street taxis. Supports overseas phone registration; links overseas cards or pays via Alipay/WeChat. Has English interface and built-in translation for driver messaging.

Tip: Avoid "Economy" – cars and drivers are less reliable. Request ride from a well-known landmark. Always check license plate matches the app before getting in.

4. Amap (Gaode Map) Global

Most accurate navigation in mainland China. Google Maps does not work accurately here. Full metro/bus/walking routes with real-time traffic. Displays metro facilities (escalators, elevators). Important: After downloading, set language in Settings → Apps → Amap before opening.

5. Railway 12306

Official app for train ticketing. Essential for high-speed rail travel.
